Building the Future: Why Youth Movement Matters More Than Ever

Aug 6, 2025

At East Coast Athlete, we believe youth deserve more than just a space to “burn off energy.” They deserve a program that educates, empowers, and equips them for a lifetime of movement — and that’s exactly what our Youth Movement Program (YOMO) is built for.

The Youth Activity Crisis

You’ve likely heard the stats, and they’re confronting. Despite global guidelines recommending at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous movement per day, most Australian kids are falling well short.

According to the AusPlay study:

  • Half of children aged 0–14 are only active once per week outside of school.
  • Only 11% of youth meet the recommended four activity sessions weekly.
  • 9 out of 10 teens fail to meet Australia’s Physical Activity Guidelines.
  • Nearly 25% of kids aged 5–17 are now overweight or obese.

With screen time up and outdoor time down, we’re seeing the long-term effects — not just on physical health, but on mental and emotional wellbeing too. The need for structured young athletes’ training programs has never been more urgent.

What Sets YOMO Apart?

YOMO isn’t your typical after-school sports session. It’s a research-backed, progressive training program designed specifically for young athletes training regularly in sport, physical activity, or development squads.

Here’s how we do it differently:

  • Movement Before Resistance
We don’t throw weights at youth who haven’t built the foundation yet. Progression is based on body control and movement mastery, not lifting heavy too soon.
  • Long-Term Athletic Development
We use a 3-phase system that builds athletes from the ground up, preventing injury and burnout while promoting skill and strength over time.
  • Holistic Growth
It’s not just about muscles. YOMO supports strength, balance, flexibility, coordination, and mental resilience — core components of sustainable athletic success.

Small Groups, Real Coaching

Each YOMO session is capped at 10 participants, allowing us to deliver personalised coaching and feedback. Led by Accredited Exercise Physiologists and strength and conditioning coaches, the program ensures that every young athlete receives the attention they deserve.

For families seeking flexibility, our online option offers structured guidance and self-paced progression — ideal for independent or remote young athletes training.

Why Start Early?

Habits formed in adolescence carry through adulthood. That’s why developing proper movement mechanics, strength foundations, and mindset early is key. When done right, young athletes’ training builds the confidence and competence needed not just for sport, but for life.

Whether your child dreams of playing elite-level sport or simply wants to stay active and strong, YOMO sets the groundwork for future success.

Join the Movement

The Youth Movement Program (YOMO) is more than a fitness class; it’s a long-term investment in your child’s health, performance, and personal growth. If your teen is already active and ready to take the next step, we’re here to guide them.
